Inspiration
The Wholefood Planet brand is inspired by the Daily Bread Co-operatives. This commercially successful organisation has two separate licensed businesses in Northampton and Cambridge, which have been trading for over 30 and 15 years respectively.
The two retail warehouses are self funding through commercial activities and active in their local communities, supporting events and organisations through donations and educational activities. One is a recognised Social Firm and the other a very good quality Social Enterprise.
Daily Bread has always been committed to selling products that are ethically sourced and fairly traded, with no additives, preservatives or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The stores support locally sourced and organic product lines. Recycling, using minimal packaging and promoting the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products are also part of the Daily Bread ethos.
The ongoing viability of this business combined with the excellent record of employing and support people with disabilities, mental health needs and learning difficulties contributed significantly to the business model being chosen as the basis for the flagship firm of Wholefood Planet by Social Firms UK. The Wholefood Planet Operations Manual and training modules combine best practice from the two stores and have been developed in co-operation with Daily Bread, offering tried and tested systems, processes and documentation to licensees.
